Sanctimony: "affected or hypocritical holiness."
The cover features a depiction of the severed head of one James Graham, 1st Marquess of Montrose, as detailed in lino print. A Scottish general, Covenanter and Royalist who, despite a series of victories as captain general of Scotland under King Charles I, suffered defeat at Carbisdale and was duly hanged in the marketplace of Edinburgh on May 21st, 1650.
“The body was left hanging for three hours and was then cut down and dismembered for the limbs to be sent for public display in Stirling, Aberdeen, Perth and Glasgow. The head was cut off and fixed on a spike on the Tolbooth, where it remained rotting for eleven years.”
Despite his status as a controversial figure for many reasons, not least his allegiance to varying parties over the course of his lifetime, the severed head of the Marquess presents fitting themes and context for this track in a number of ways:
The struggle against the merging of church and state
The utter ruthlessness those in power will display to those they claim dominion over, be it church, state or monarchy
The speed at which those in power are quick to destroy those in their service once their needs have been met
